Patient Navigation & Healthcare Access Services

Every service listed below is provided at absolutely no cost to you. Arizona Healthcare Help is funded through grants, foundations, and community donations. Our team of licensed social workers, certified application counselors, and trained community health workers are here to eliminate the barriers standing between you and the healthcare you need.

Prescription Savings

Prescription Assistance Programs (PAPs)

No one should have to choose between paying rent and filling a prescription. Arizona Healthcare Help connects patients with manufacturer-sponsored Patient Assistance Programs that provide brand-name medications free of charge or at dramatically reduced cost. We currently maintain active enrollment partnerships with over 200 pharmaceutical manufacturers including Pfizer RxPathways, Lilly Cares, AstraZeneca AZ&Me, Johnson & Johnson Patient Assistance Foundation, Merck Helps, and Bristol-Myers Squibb Patient Assistance.

Our navigators handle every step of the enrollment process: gathering required documentation (proof of income, prescriber statements, insurance denial letters), completing manufacturer application forms, submitting packages via certified mail or electronic portal, and following up on approval status. Once approved, medications are shipped directly to the patient or their physician's office, typically arriving within two to four weeks. We also connect patients with the Arizona 340B Community Health Center pharmacy network, state Rx discount cards, and GoodRx-style coupon alternatives for generic medications that can reduce costs by 80 percent or more.

Charity Care & Hospital Financial Assistance Applications

Under federal and Arizona state law, most nonprofit hospitals are required to maintain charity care programs that partially or fully forgive medical bills for patients meeting income eligibility criteria. Despite this legal requirement, these programs are rarely advertised and hospital billing departments almost never proactively inform patients about their existence. Arizona Healthcare Help changes that.

Our team has deep working relationships with the financial assistance departments at Banner Health (Banner University Medical Center South, Banner University Medical Center Tucson), Tucson Medical Center, Carondelet St. Mary's Hospital, Carondelet St. Joseph's Hospital, Northwest Medical Center, and Oro Valley Hospital. We know the income thresholds, documentation requirements, and appeal procedures for each institution. We complete the application on your behalf, attach required income verification, and submit it directly to the hospital's financial counseling team. Approval rates for applications submitted through our office exceed 85 percent because we ensure every package is complete and compliant before submission.

Public Benefits

AHCCCS & KidsCare Enrollment Assistance

AHCCCS (Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System) is Arizona's Medicaid program, providing comprehensive health coverage to qualifying low-income adults, children, pregnant individuals, and seniors. KidsCare is Arizona's Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), covering children in families that earn too much for AHCCCS but cannot afford private insurance. As an AHCCCS Authorized Enrollment Entity, Arizona Healthcare Help can process your application from start to finish, including identity verification, income documentation, and submission to the Arizona Department of Economic Security.

Many eligible Arizonans do not apply because they believe the process is too complicated or they assume they will not qualify. Our navigators simplify the process into a single appointment. We walk you through every question, gather required documents (pay stubs, tax returns, proof of residency), and submit your application electronically with real-time status tracking. If your application is denied, we file the appeal and represent your case through the administrative hearing process.

Affordable Care

Sliding-Scale Community Clinic Referrals

Southern Arizona is home to an extensive network of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) that provide primary care, dental, behavioral health, and pharmacy services on an income-based sliding fee scale. These community health centers are legally required to serve all patients regardless of insurance status or ability to pay. Arizona Healthcare Help maintains referral partnerships with El Rio Health, Marana Health Center, United Community Health Center, and the Community Health Center of Southern Arizona.

We help patients identify the closest community health center to their home, schedule their first appointment, complete the sliding-fee discount application (which determines the patient's copay based on income and family size), and arrange transportation if needed. For patients who need specialty care beyond what FQHCs provide, we coordinate referrals to Banner Charity Care specialists and the University of Arizona Medical School teaching clinics.

Financial Wellness

Medical Debt Counseling & Bill Negotiation

Medical debt affects one in three Arizona adults and is the single largest cause of personal bankruptcy in the state. Our medical debt counselors are trained to analyze itemized hospital bills for duplicate charges, upcoding errors, and services that were not actually rendered. We then negotiate directly with hospital billing departments, collection agencies, and insurance companies to reduce the total balance owed.

In cases where the patient qualifies for retroactive charity care coverage, we can often eliminate the debt entirely. For debts that cannot be forgiven, we negotiate interest-free payment plans that fit the patient's budget and ensure the account is not reported to credit bureaus. Since 2017, Arizona Healthcare Help has helped reduce or eliminate over $2.1 million in medical debt across Pima County, protecting families from bankruptcy, wage garnishment, and credit destruction.

Access Support

Transportation Assistance

Transportation is one of the most common barriers to healthcare access in Southern Arizona, particularly for patients living in rural communities like Sahuarita, Green Valley, Vail, and the Tohono O'odham Nation. Arizona Healthcare Help coordinates non-emergency medical transportation through Sun Tran reduced-fare programs, AHCCCS NEMT (Non-Emergency Medical Transportation) benefits, volunteer driver networks, and partnerships with local ride-share assistance programs.

For AHCCCS-enrolled patients, we help activate their NEMT benefit, which provides free rides to and from medical appointments. For uninsured patients, we connect them with our volunteer driver network and, when available, provide gas cards or bus passes to eliminate transportation costs entirely. No patient should miss a medical appointment because they cannot get to the clinic.
